| PUBLIC ART THE FOUNDATION FOR THE STUDY OF OBJECTIVE ART, created an outreaching branch CITY ART, to explore the nature and possibility of objective art in the public landscape. What is public art? Usually art is something which an individual likes or dislikes based on personal preference. Public galleries are places that individuals may choose to visit if they are not intimidated by the cost and formality of the place. Within those locations the viewer agrees to expose themselves to a larger variety of art than that of personal preference. Public art however, enters into those places that we travel through, outside of our more intimate spaces and yet they are part of our lives, a part that we have little control over. For the artist who chooses to place their work in the public domain there is much more to consider than their own self expression. The artist must consider the expanded field of attention which this work will occupy, its relationship to the surrounding forms and structures, how it communicates at a distance and to those coming in close contact with it. It is interesting to note that a tree or a plant is never disorienting, offensive or opinionated. To create public art which actually enhances the already crowded visual environment is a difficult challenge but one which we believe is a worthy pursuit.
